Birmingham chicken wings go viral: ‘Best wings I ever had in my life’

A post about chicken wings in Birmingham has gone viral on X.

It all started when comedian KevOnStage posted a picture of fried chicken with mumbo sauce and rice from a restaurant in Washington D.C.

Wings in the nation’s capital are known for mumbo sauce, a mix of barbecue sauce and sweet and sour sauce, but sweeter and spicier.

The tweet prompted a discussion debating who has the best chicken wings in the country.

Another X user quoted Kev’s tweet with a picture of BBQ chicken wings and fries loaded with mumbo sauce from a Chinese restaurant in New York City.

Someone else quote tweeted that picture with another picture of wings and fries from Harold’s Chicken in Chicago. The Windy City is popular for loading their fried chicken wings and fries with mild sauce, which is a mix of ketchup and hot sauce.

Then it was Alabama’s turn.

“Birmingham has entered the chat,” Alec Williams said on X. He posted a picture of a Birmingham chicken wing combo staple: A 10-piece hot lemon pepper and cajun ranch fries. The only thing missing from the picture was a large cup of kiki pooh aka a really sugary Tropical Punch and Lemonade Kool-Aid mix.

The post garnered more than 1,200 reposts, thousands of likes and hundreds of comments including Josh Sharkey saying, “Birmingham got the best wings I ever had in my life.”

The meal came from Wings Heaven, a popular chicken wing restaurant in Fairfield near Miles College.

After AL.com inquired about where the wings came from in the original tweet, Roy Wood Jr. chimed in saying, “Y’all about to have white food bloggers coming to Fairfield after dark looking for these wings.”

Other people commented about more popular Birmingham chicken spots like J. Wings, Urban Smoke, and Green Acres.

During the last few days, the X thread has caused a national conversation around which city has the best wings or the best sauce combo that accompanies the chicken. The narratives also proved that, culturally, chicken wings are a favorite delicacy no matter where you go, but each corner of the country seem to have their own twist on how to make it the best.

Online, people from everywhere are unified in thinking that Atlanta, Chicago, Washington D.C., Baltimore, and New York City have some of the best wings. However, Birmingham seems to be leading the conversation as an underdog favorite.

One X user said, “When I lived in Birmingham I had the best chicken wings out there. A whole lot better than anything I had out here in NYC, in Iowa, and when I visited Chicago, and I hate to say it but better than wings and fries with mumbo sauce back home in the DMV.”
